George

The entire SORA system is fatally flawed. Tremendous resources are spent to track supposedly dangerous sex criminal predators and this is supposed to make the public feel safe.

The truth is that most of the registered offenders online were already known to their victims - before the offense.

The truth is that many if not most of the registered offenders are there for crimes that give no indication of them being a threat to the public at large.

The truth is that most all of those registered offenders registered by choice - while it was required, they wisely chose to comply. The most dangerous do *not* comply... So the offenders you see online are the ones who make their probation appointments, are not in violation of probation, and are being monitored closely by probation or parole. These are not the ones most likely to step out of line.

What you see online are the most cooperative offenders, the ones who have taken responsibility and the ones the system knows about. Studies show that offenders of all stripes, who are compliant with the system and monitored rarely re-offend. Regardless of what garbage you may have heard about "recidivism".

Consider also that your average online registered offender is likely not a violent rapist. He may be someone who committed an act of incest. It is shown that incest offenders rarely commit offenses against other victims, and are among the lowest repeat offenders of ANY crime - including selling your kids drugs (WHY is there no registry of people arrested for selling drugs to kids???? - I'd rather know my neighbor dealt crack to a 14 year old)

It is very, very misleading. Many of these offenders are non violent. Many of them made a huge mistake and would like to do their penance, make whatever restitution they can, and go on to be productive members of society. Unfortunately, the mis-understanding, mis-representation, and hysteria that is Sex Offender Registration does not permit them to.

They can't get jobs. They can't find a place to live. This lulls the public into a false sense of security, and makes a stable/honest life (PROVEN to curtail repeat offending in any criminal) impossible to achieve for the offender.
